Details

Working-class neighborhood north of downtown, between the coast and hillside. Morning markets sell fresh produce, spices, and household goods at prices much lower than tourist areas. Bakeries have good fresh pastries and the sea breeze helps on hot days. During the day it's lively - families shopping, kids playing football, vendors shouting. Feels more authentic than upscale areas. Very few people speak English or French - mostly Arabic and Berber. Foreign women stand out and get attention. After dark the area quiets down fast. The waterfront is industrial and local, not recreational. If you want to see real Algiers life, go during morning market hours with a local guide and leave before evening.
