Algiers, Algeria
Downtown commercial center with shopping, dining, and colonial architecture. Safe during the day but empties after dark. Daytime only.
Downtown Algiers centers on Didouche Mourad street with French colonial architecture, shops, and busy cafes. During the day it's active - office workers, students, shoppers, tourists checking out the Grande Poste and University of Algiers. Architecture is Mediterranean and Parisian colonial, different from the Casbah. More restaurants and cafes than most neighborhoods - La Renaissance and Café Eddy are decent for eating alone during the day. Metro stops make it convenient. After 6pm when offices close and shops shut, it empties fast. Streets that feel safe during the day get isolated after dark. Avoid the port area after sunset. Good for daytime shopping, dining, and exploring - get back to your hotel or to Hydra by evening.
