Buenos Aires, Argentina
San Telmo has the most authentic old Buenos Aires atmosphere with tango culture and antique markets. Great for daytime visits but avoid walking around alone after dark.
San Telmo has amazing cultural experiences and historic charm, but you need to be smart about timing if you're traveling alone. The Sunday market at Plaza Dorrego is great - lots of people around, vendors keeping an eye on things, and a generally safe atmosphere with the crowds. But this neighborhood changes completely after dark. The cobblestone streets get poorly lit and foot traffic drops off significantly. Your best bet is to visit during the day for the antique markets and tango culture, then head back to safer neighborhoods for evening activities. The historic buildings and narrow streets are beautiful for cultural exploration when you time it right.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Retiro is Buenos Aires' main transport hub with mixed conditions. The Plaza San Martín area is fine, but avoid the bus terminal area, especially after dark.
Microcentro has the main tourist sights and government buildings, but it's really just a business district. Safe during work hours but gets quiet and empty at night.
Villa Crespo gives you a real Buenos Aires neighborhood experience with emerging trendy spots. Safe during the day but gets quiet at night, so stick to main streets after dark.
