Kond (Old Quarter)

Kond is Yerevan's old quarter with 17th-century architecture and narrow medieval streets. Interesting for daytime visits but poor lighting makes it unsafe at night. Visit during daylight only.

Kond is Yerevan's oldest neighborhood with narrow streets and traditional architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries. Alleyways are 3-4 feet wide with historic homes built into the hillside. The Surp Hovhannes Church is the main landmark. It's interesting during the day for history and photos - a stark contrast to modern Yerevan nearby. The streets have poor lighting and most residents are elderly locals. The narrow passages that look fine during the day become unsafe after dark because of poor visibility and few people around. Running water and electricity only arrived in 2017 for many homes. Visit during daytime, ideally on a walking tour to learn the history and navigate properly. Don't go after sunset. Remember these are people's homes, not a tourist attraction.
