Hobart, Australia
Salamanca and the CBD are the most convenient base with restaurants, the Saturday market, and waterfront. Safe and takes solo diners, but touristy with higher prices.
The 1830s sandstone warehouses at Salamanca Place are now restaurants, galleries, and shops facing the harbor. Saturday's Salamanca Market (8:30am-3pm) gets huge crowds - arrive by 9am or it's packed. The waterfront runs from Franklin Wharf past Constitution Dock where fishing boats sell seafood directly. During the day it's busy with tourists, business people, locals - constant activity. Restaurants take solo diners without issue. Waterfront bars fill up from 5pm with after-work people. Good lighting, regular police patrols. Quiets down after 11pm on weeknights, weekends go later. You'll pay tourist prices for everything but the location is convenient for short stays. Mix of business hotels, boutique places, some hostels.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
North Hobart is where locals eat and drink. Elizabeth Street has the restaurants and bars, less polished than the waterfront but more authentic. Solo dining is normal here.
West Hobart is the budget option with backpacker hostels and local cafes. Safe but very quiet at night - you'll go elsewhere for evenings.
Battery Point has the historic colonial buildings and low crime. Quiet residential area that's five minutes from Salamanca. More expensive but feels authentically Hobart.
