Details

West Hobart is where artists, musicians, and budget travelers end up. Streets climb uphill from the CBD with weatherboard houses, community gardens, cafes doing local organic stuff. Pigeon Hole sources from their own farm. Creative vibe, not pretentious. Locals are friendly. Several backpacker hostels here cost less than waterfront areas. During the day it's peaceful and safe to walk around. Lansdowne cafe is the community spot where people chat. At night it gets very quiet - residential with almost no bars or restaurants. Lighting is okay but foot traffic drops to zero after 9pm. Safe, just empty. People stay here for cheap accommodation then go to North Hobart or the CBD for evenings. The uphill walk from the city center gets tiring, but buses run regularly during the day.
