Melbourne, Australia
Carlton has good Italian food and cultural attractions like the museum. The student population keeps it lively but can also make some areas a bit rowdy at night. Overall it's manageable if you stick to the main streets and take normal city precautions.
Carlton is Little Italy with decent restaurants on Lygon Street, but the university students can make things rowdy at night. During the day it's fine - the Italian restaurants are used to solo diners and the Carlton Gardens are nice for walking. The museum area feels safe with decent security. But weekend nights get messy with student parties, especially on the side streets. Lygon Street itself stays busy until about 10pm with restaurant activity, but avoid the residential streets after dark where drunk students hang out. Pickpocketing can be an issue when it's crowded.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Richmond has some of Melbourne's best Vietnamese food, and the multicultural vibe is genuine rather than touristy. Some parts can feel rough though, especially the northern end of Victoria Street, so you'll want to stick to the main commercial areas and be aware of your surroundings.
Collingwood gives you access to Melbourne's alternative scene along Smith Street. The young professional and creative crowd can be welcoming, but you should be aware that this area has higher crime rates than other parts of Melbourne, especially at night.
The CBD works well as a base since you can walk to most major attractions and there's decent public transport. The main thing to watch out for is the train stations late at night - they can feel a bit sketchy when empty. Otherwise it's pretty standard for a city center.
