Details

Coogee is basically what Bondi would be if it wasn't constantly overrun with tourists and backpackers - a proper Australian beach town with families, locals, and space to actually relax. The lifeguards are just as professional as Bondi's, and McIvers Baths (women and children only) is a unique experience you won't find elsewhere. The coastal walk from Bondi is genuinely beautiful and well-maintained, though carry water because Australian sun is no joke. Coogee Bay Road has that suburban feel with family restaurants and the RSL club where locals actually hang out. Weekend crowds are busy but manageable, and people clear out earlier than Bondi's party scene. The pavilion area stays well-lit with decent foot traffic for evening walks. The northern headland walks are gorgeous during the day but get pretty dark at night, so stick to the main beach area after sunset. Buses back to the city run regularly and it's a straightforward trip, so you're not stuck if you want to head back after dark. Overall it's much more relaxed than Bondi while still giving you that classic Sydney beach experience.
