Sydney, Australia
Newtown has an alternative vibe with street art, vintage shopping, and diverse food options along King Street. Good for experiencing local culture away from the tourist areas. Generally feels safe and has a community atmosphere.
Newtown is where Sydney gets weird in the best possible way - King Street is packed with vintage shops, street art, and restaurants serving everything from $5 Vietnamese to fancy modern Australian. The crowd is students, artists, and anyone who wants to avoid the CBD tourist scene. During university semester there are always people around, but it gets noticeably quieter during holidays when students go home. The live music scene is solid and the crowds are generally chill - more indie kids than aggressive drunks. Solo dining and shopping is totally normal here; it's that kind of neighborhood where everyone's doing their own thing. The street art is amazing and locals are usually happy to chat about the area's history. The train station area needs normal city awareness, but overall it feels safe because there's such a strong community vibe. Your main concerns are standard urban stuff - watch your bag in crowded venues and don't stumble around drunk late at night.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Bondi is famous and generally safe with lifeguards and lots of people around. Good for meeting other travelers and has plenty of cafes and restaurants, but expect crowds and high prices. The beach itself is nice when it's not packed.
Coogee is a family-friendly beach area with the coastal walk to Bondi and women-only ocean baths. Less crowded than Bondi with good restaurants and a safe suburban feel. Nice option if you want a quieter beach experience.
Paddington is upscale with Victorian architecture, boutique shopping, and galleries. More expensive but feels safe and has good restaurants. Nice area if you have the budget for it.
