Saggen is a calm residential area close to the Old Town. It suits quiet nights; dinner and drinks are mostly elsewhere.
Tree-lined streets and 19th-century villas make up Saggen, a quiet district next to the Hofgarten park and the university. It has little nightlife and very few tourists, and the residents are a mix of professionals, families and students. Daytime is busy with people walking dogs and cycling. After dark the streets empty out, but they are well lit and feel safe, and the Old Town is a 10-15 minute walk or a short tram ride away. The Hofgarten is pleasant by day but dark and empty late at night, so avoid it alone then. Saggen works as a quiet base close to the center, but evening entertainment means going elsewhere.

Pradl is a quiet, budget-friendly residential district with good transport links. There is little going on in the evenings, but it works as a base if you do not mind the commute to the center.
Wilten is a local district with a good cafe and bar street and easy tram links. It is good value and still feels safe at night, apart from the area toward the train station, which is more mixed.
The Altstadt is the easiest and most walkable area to stay in, with a steady flow of people, good lighting and plenty of places to eat alone. The trade-offs are higher prices and some pickpocketing in crowds.
