Salzburg, Austria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Salzburg.
Working-class residential area centered on Augustiner Bräustübl, a historic beer hall where bringing your own food is normal. Local character, safe streets, less English spoken.
Mülln is built around the Augustiner Bräustübl beer hall, with about 5,000 residents across the river from the Old Town. The name comes from old mills that used to operate here, and it still has a working-class feel despite getting trendier. Augustiner Bräu, from 1621 in a former monastery, is Austria's largest beer hall where locals have gathered for centuries - you buy beer in stone pitchers straight from wooden barrels, then get food from market stalls or bring your own (which is allowed and normal). The beer garden under chestnut trees seats 1,400 people and mixes families, students, and elderly locals. Going solo is fine - you'll fit in with everyone else. Open 3pm-11pm weekdays, 2:30pm-11pm weekends, cash only. Outside the beer hall, Mülln is quieter and more residential than tourist districts, about 15 minutes walk from the Old Town. You'll see locals doing daily errands, small cafes where being a regular matters, and streets that empty out early in the evening since people live here rather than party. English is less common than in tourist areas, though Augustiner staff are used to international visitors. The residential character means people are around, which helps with safety.
