Salzburg, Austria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Salzburg.
A 19th-century district around Mirabell Gardens with a mix of tourist amenities and residential character. Good cafes, bars for a younger crowd, and safe streets.
On the right bank of the Salzach River, Neustadt is a 19th-century district built around Mirabell Palace and Gardens. You'll find Salzburg's main cultural venues here, along with the Münzgasse area that has breakfast cafes and poke bowl places. It's a mix of locals and tourists, less dominated by tour groups than the Altstadt. The Mirabell Gardens are free and look best at sunrise when they're relatively empty. The Old Town is 5-10 minutes across the bridges, so you're central but in a more residential area. At places like 220GRAD cafe, you'll see people working on laptops or reading - solo dining is normal. Nightlife skews toward bars and clubs rather than traditional beer halls, with a younger crowd. Streets are well-lit and you'll see police around. The Mirabell area stays busy until late, especially in summer when there are outdoor concerts in the gardens. English is common in the tourist-oriented cafes and restaurants around Mirabell, less so in more local spots.
