Bridgetown, Barbados
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Bridgetown.
Downtown is the commercial center with the Careenage waterfront and duty-free shopping on Broad Street. Walkable with visible police during the day, but prepare for constant harassment and vendor approaches. It empties out after business hours - come during the day, go elsewhere at night.
Downtown centers on the Careenage waterfront, a natural harbor with a boardwalk along the sailboats and catamarans. During business hours you'll find locals and tourists on Broad Street shopping, checking out the Parliament buildings, or eating lunch at cafes. The boardwalk has views and a small park with old cannons. Expect constant approaches - taxi offers, jewelry vendors, men trying to chat or sell you things. It's relentless even in broad daylight. The area is generally safe during the day with visible police, but some parts feel rundown and it empties out after 6pm when shops close. Pickpockets work Swan Street and Broad Street, especially during tourist season. Waterfront cafes take solo diners and some have good views, though check if they're still open - some from older guides have closed. For evening stuff, go elsewhere since downtown clears out fast after work hours.
