Bridgetown, Barbados
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Bridgetown.
St Lawrence Gap is the entertainment strip with lots of restaurants, bars, and clubs. Expect serious harassment at night. Use the buddy system, take taxis between venues, and stick to daytime beach and dining if you're solo.
St Lawrence Gap ('The Gap') has been the nightlife center since the 1950s. The strip along Highway 7 is packed with nightclubs, bars, and restaurants - Mexican, Brazilian, Bajan, everything - in a small area that gets busy after sunset. Reggae, Soca, R&B, Rock, and Jazz from places like Sugar Ultra Lounge, Old Jamm Inn, Cafe Sol, and beach club Harbour Lights. The vibe is energetic but harassment at night is common - you'll get hassled, approached, and hit on constantly. Not dangerous necessarily, but uncomfortable and relentless. Go in groups if you can, use taxis between places instead of walking alone, and be ready to shut down approaches. During the day it's a different scene - friendly restaurants and beach. Mimosas Trattoria (Italian), Paulo's Churrasco do Brasil, PRIMO Bar & Bistro, Sharkey's Tropical Café. Dover Beach has calm water and feels safe during the day. Restaurants cover all budgets and cuisines - local food or international if you want familiar stuff. Police are around because of the activity, but crowds mean pickpockets too. Watch your belongings and drink. Extra careful during Crop Over Festival when it gets packed and everyone's drinking heavily.

Downtown is the commercial center with the Careenage waterfront and duty-free shopping on Broad Street. Walkable with visible police during the day, but prepare for constant harassment and vendor approaches. It empties out after business hours - come during the day, go elsewhere at night.
Oistins is a fishing village known for Friday and Saturday Fish Fry - fresh seafood, live music, actual Bajan culture. One of the safer nightlife options with police and family atmosphere.
The Garrison is a UNESCO site good for history and watching local life at the Savannah. Safe, family-friendly, less harassment than downtown. Come for daytime museum visits and cafe time.
