Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The commercial center with Ferhadija pedestrian street. Safe day and night on main streets. Good cafe culture. More European than traditional Bosnian, with lots of English speakers.
Between the Old Town and the modern business district, Centar is where locals shop and meet for coffee. Ferhadija Street is the main pedestrian boulevard, busy from morning to late evening with students, shoppers, and office workers. The architecture changes as you walk - Ottoman on the east side, Austro-Hungarian 19th-century buildings on the west. International shops, local boutiques, and cafes line the streets. Women sit alone at sidewalk cafes with laptops or books all the time. English is common here since it's both a business area and tourist route. During the day there's constant foot traffic and police around. Main streets like Ferhadija stay well-lit and busy until midnight, especially weekends. The Eternal Flame memorial is a popular meeting point. Keep your bag in front of you on crowded streets and trams - pickpockets work these areas. The vibe is more European city than traditional Bosnian.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
The business and government district. Very safe but limited local character. Good if you prioritize security and modern amenities over authentic experience.
A quiet residential hillside area with views and easy access to the city center and Trebević mountain. Safe and authentic, but less English and quieter at night.
Residential neighborhood of socialist-era apartment blocks. Affordable and authentic but almost no English speakers and limited evening activities. Good for budget travelers wanting real local life, though you'll travel for attractions.
