Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The historic walled city entrance above Baščaršija. Famous for Yellow Fortress views. Safe during daytime but poorly lit at night. No dining or nightlife - just historic sites and sunset views. Steep climb needs good shoes.
Just above Baščaršija on the hillside, Vratnik and Kovači form the historic walled city entrance with narrow streets climbing to Yellow Fortress (Žuta Tabija). Kovači street goes uphill from the Old Town, passing the Martyrs' Cemetery and Alija Izetbegović memorial before reaching Vratnik's old defensive walls. Yellow Fortress was built 1727-1739 as a defense point. Now it's the most popular sunset viewpoint with 360-degree views of the city, river valley, and mountains. The climb from Baščaršija takes 15-20 minutes and is steep, but the views are worth it. The area has a village atmosphere with stone houses and quiet streets where some locals still live. During the day, walking up Kovači and through Vratnik to the fortresses feels safe and scenic - you'll see other tourists going for sunset. But the streets are poorly lit after dark and feel isolated away from main paths. There are no restaurants or cafes - it's about historic sites and views, not dining or nightlife. After visiting Yellow Fortress or White Fortress, go back down to Baščaršija instead of wandering the dark hillside. Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones and steep hills.

Residential neighborhood of socialist-era apartment blocks. Affordable and authentic but almost no English speakers and limited evening activities. Good for budget travelers wanting real local life, though you'll travel for attractions.
The Old Town with cobblestone streets, traditional crafts, and Bosnian restaurants. Safe during the day with police around, but watch for pickpockets in crowds. Eating alone is normal and the cafe culture is good.
A quiet residential hillside area with views and easy access to the city center and Trebević mountain. Safe and authentic, but less English and quieter at night.
