Maun, Botswana
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Maun.
Riverside lodges about 8km from town, quiet and natural. Good for a peaceful base before or after Delta trips, but you need arranged transport for everything and can't walk around after dark because of wildlife.
Matlapaneng is along the Thamalakane River about 8km from central Maun - quieter and more natural than staying in town. It's mostly residential with lodges and guesthouses spread along the riverbank. You'll hear hippos grunting at night and birds during the day. River-view properties here have access to boat cruises for seeing hippos, crocodiles, and birds. It feels remote and peaceful, which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you want. Everyone at lodges speaks English. The lodge bars and restaurants are fine for solo dining - you'll see other safari-goers and nature people. The downside is you need arranged transport for absolutely everything. There's nowhere to walk to for food or supplies. Lodges can get you taxis or have their own vehicles. At night it's pitch dark with no street lighting. Stay on lodge property after sunset - walking around isn't safe because of wildlife (hippos are actually dangerous) and because you can't see anything. The lodges are secure with 24/7 staff.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Quiet residential area with moderate-priced guesthouses, better infrastructure than Boseja but not touristy. Need transport for everything. Good middle ground between budget local areas and expensive lodges.
The commercial center with malls, cafes, and safari booking offices. Safe and busy during the day, quiet at night. Good base for supplies and meeting other travelers.
Local working-class area with cheap guesthouses. Authentic but isolated from tourist stuff, limited English, need taxis for everything. Budget option if you're comfortable in local neighborhoods, though transport costs add up.
