Details

Lapa is Rio's nightlife district but becomes very dangerous after dark. The famous Selarón Steps should only be visited before 6pm when police and vendors are present - after that it's unsafe. Drug dealers operate openly around the historic arches after 11pm, and solo female travelers report frequent harassment and theft attempts. Street parties draw crowds but lack security, creating opportunities for pickpockets who work in teams. Many ride-share drivers refuse pickups from side streets, leaving people stranded. Police presence is minimal after midnight when the area fills with intoxicated people. Solo female travelers should avoid Lapa at night entirely and only visit major attractions during busy daytime hours.

Copacabana is the most famous Rio experience, but also the most chaotic and crime-prone. The beach is iconic but constantly crowded with vendors and pickpockets. Unless you specifically want the Copacabana experience, Ipanema or Leblon are safer choices.
