Plovdiv, Bulgaria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Plovdiv.
The commercial center with shopping and dining. Less charming than Kapana or the Old Town but practical, safe, and well-lit at night.
Main Street (Knyaz Aleksandar I) is a 1,750-meter pedestrian zone running from Central Square past the municipality building - there's literally a Roman Stadium track underneath it. During the day it's busy with locals shopping, students between classes, and tourists taking photos of the Dzhumaya Mosque and ruins. You'll see international chains mixed with Bulgarian shops, pharmacies, bookstores, and traditional cafes where old men play backgammon. It stays active into the evening with people meeting after work or heading to restaurants. Lighting is good and there are usually police around, so it feels safe at night. There's a mix of cheap Bulgarian eateries and mid-range international places - eating alone is normal here. Most shops and restaurants have staff who speak some English since they're used to tourists. It's more commercial and less charming than Kapana or the Old Town, but it's practical and connects the neighborhoods via a pedestrian tunnel.
