Plovdiv, Bulgaria
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Plovdiv.
Recreational area with a big rowing canal, walking and biking paths. Peaceful and safe but far from tourist areas and nightlife.
The Rowing Canal area is in the western Smirnenski district, built around a 2,200-meter canal that's the largest rowing facility in the Balkans. The canal has bike lanes and walking paths along both sides where you'll see families cycling, people jogging, and inline skating on weekends. There are restaurants along the water serving Bulgarian food with a view - it's quiet compared to the city center. The neighborhood around it is modern residential with apartment buildings, schools, and convenient access to supermarkets. It's safe for walking and outdoor activities, though it empties out after sunset since it's mainly recreational. The location isn't central - you need buses or taxis to get to the Old Town, Kapana, or tourist areas. It works better for longer stays if you want a quiet base near nature rather than being in the middle of things.
