Details

Little Italy is centered on Jean-Talon Market, a year-round market with produce, cheese, and local products. The neighborhood still has Italian families who've been here for generations, plus family-run restaurants, espresso cafes, and good cannoli. Now mixed with younger people drawn to the food scene. It's residential and safe, low crime, strong community feel. People sit alone at cafes reading the paper - normal here. Less English than downtown, some Italian helps but isn't required. Streets are lit and safe at night, though quieter than Plateau or Mile End since it's more residential. The market gets packed on weekends with families. You're away from the main tourist areas, which means fewer crowds.
