Details

Plateau Mont-Royal has the murals, spiral staircases, and concentration of cafes that define Montreal's image. It's where artists, students, and young professionals live, which means lots of independent coffee shops and restaurants. The main streets (Mont-Royal Avenue, Saint-Denis, Saint-Laurent) are lined with places where people sit with laptops for hours - totally normal behavior here. Lots of solo diners reading or working. Staff generally speak English since they deal with tourists and internationals regularly. Streets stay busy until around midnight with people heading home from bars. There's property crime - bike theft mostly, some break-ins - so don't leave stuff visible in cars or unlocked on porches. Violent crime is rare. The area is walkable day and night, just keep an eye on your belongings in crowds.
