Santiago, Chile
Barrio Italia has international restaurants, specialty coffee, artisan shops. Safe during day and evening. Good food scene, comfortable for sitting alone in cafes.
Barrio Italia is along Avenida Italia in the Ñuñoa area. Italian craftsmen settled here in the 1800s. Now it's artisan shops, specialty coffee, and varied restaurants - Peruvian ceviche, Neapolitan pizza, Venezuelan arepas, whatever. Colorful facades, cobblestone streets. Young creatives, students, residents mix together. Design studios next to vintage shops next to food spots. Sitting alone in cafes with a laptop or book is normal. Safe during the day and early evening since it's part of Ñuñoa. Not much nightlife compared to Bellavista or Providencia - more about finding an interesting shop or having a long dinner than partying late. Good for walking around on a Sunday afternoon.

Ñuñoa is residential with young professionals and families. Safe, good local restaurants, peaceful. Cheaper than tourist areas with good security. Real Chilean life, convenient metro access.
Providencia is safe and convenient with good restaurants, cafes, and nightlife. Costs more than other areas but you get walkability and security. Easy metro access to the rest of the city.
Las Condes is the safest and most expensive part of Santiago. High-end restaurants, luxury shopping, heavy security. Lacks local character but gives you peace of mind if that's what you need.
