Shenzhen, China
Shekou is the expat bubble with English everywhere, international food, and strong safety. Less authentic Chinese experience but comfortable if you want Western amenities.
Most of Shenzhen's expats live in Shekou, so you'll hear as much English as Mandarin around Sea World. Restaurant menus come in English automatically, and cafe staff can take orders without translation apps. It used to be a fishing village 40 years ago and still has a coastal, relaxed feel - palm trees, waterfront walks, and less intensity than downtown business districts. The Minghua cruise ship landmark and surrounding bars and restaurants stay busy until midnight on weekends, though the crowd skews older professionals rather than the party scene at Coco Park. People eat alone constantly here since it caters to international business travelers and expat families. You'll see women working on laptops in cafes for hours without anyone bothering them. The expat community is tight-knit - everyone seems to know each other, which makes it easy to meet people but can feel cliquish. Most residential buildings have 24-hour security guards and gated access. Street lighting is strong, and there's usually foot traffic even at 11pm on weekends.
