Your Personal Safety Guide

Know exactly what YOU should do to stay safe in Havana — based on your personal experience level and travel style.

Summary

Safest area in Havana - embassies, luxury hotels, expensive restaurants. Far from the main sights and doesn't feel Cuban. Good for business trips or if safety outweighs everything else.

Details

Embassy mansions, luxury hotels, tree-lined avenues - Miramar feels more like Miami than Cuba. The safest part of Havana because of embassy security everywhere. Quiet, residential, polished. Wealthy Cubans and diplomats, not backpackers. Fine dining restaurants at high prices, international hospitals, luxury resorts. Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) has nice architecture and ocean views. But you're far from everything - 20-30 minutes by taxi to Old Havana, 15 minutes to Vedado. Great lighting, constant police presence, almost no harassment compared to tourist zones. It's expensive, isolated, and doesn't feel Cuban at all. If safety matters more than atmosphere, or you're here on business, this works. Think upscale suburb, not city neighborhood. The Fusterlandia art installation in nearby Playa is worth seeing. Good seafood restaurants but not much nightlife.

Safer than Old Havana with actual Cuban neighborhood life instead of just tourists. Better lighting and security, though catcalling still happens and you'll want basic Spanish.
