Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Historic residential area with embassies and museums. Mixed safety - better near main avenues and embassies, inconsistent on residential streets. Limited tourist amenities and English. Better for daytime museum visits than staying here.
A historic residential area with tree-lined streets, early 20th-century architecture, and several foreign embassies. Located between the Colonial Zone and modern commercial districts, convenient for accessing both tourist sites and everyday amenities. The Palace of Fine Arts and several museums are here. Safety reports are contradictory - some sources list it as safer due to embassy presence and residential character, others flag it for crime. Safety varies a lot by specific street and time of day. Areas near embassies and main avenues like Avenida Máximo Gómez feel more secure. Residential side streets get quite empty and isolated after dark. Peaceful during the day with locals going about daily life, but lacks the tourist infrastructure and English services you'll find in Piantini or the Colonial Zone. Limited dining options compared to commercial districts. The metro provides safe access to other parts of the city. Better as a place to pass through on the way to museums than as a base - the inconsistent safety and lack of tourist amenities make Piantini or near the Colonial Zone clearer choices.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Middle ground between upscale Piantini and working-class areas with more affordable dining and some local nightlife. Safety is inconsistent, especially on side streets and after dark. Better for experienced travelers who speak some Spanish.
The historic center with colonial architecture and main tourist sites. Safe during the day with Tourist Police around, but empties out and gets risky after 6pm. Worth visiting for sightseeing, but don't stay here for dinner or stay here overnight.
The upscale business and shopping district with good security, international restaurants, and modern amenities. One of the safest areas in the city, but no local character and everything costs tourist prices.
