Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Santo Domingo.
Middle ground between upscale Piantini and working-class areas with more affordable dining and some local nightlife. Safety is inconsistent, especially on side streets and after dark. Better for experienced travelers who speak some Spanish.
A mixed residential and commercial area between upscale Piantini and working-class neighborhoods. It's a middle ground - safer than budget areas but more affordable than Piantini, with more of a lived-in feel. The main corridor along Avenida Abraham Lincoln has restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, and shopping plazas with decent foot traffic during the day. Some nightlife spots like 75° Grados and Local 3 attract younger Dominican professionals rather than tourists. Safety is inconsistent. Main commercial streets feel reasonably secure with good lighting and activity, but side streets and peripheral areas get isolated and sketchy after dark. Less English spoken here than in Piantini - most places cater to locals, not international visitors. You can eat alone at more cosmopolitan restaurants along the main avenues, though you'll get more stares than in tourist areas. More authentic Dominican life than Piantini but you need more street awareness and some Spanish. Walkable during the day on main streets, but take Uber at night. Works if you want a balance of local experience and reasonable safety, but doesn't have Piantini's guaranteed security or the Colonial Zone's historic appeal.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Historic residential area with embassies and museums. Mixed safety - better near main avenues and embassies, inconsistent on residential streets. Limited tourist amenities and English. Better for daytime museum visits than staying here.
The historic center with colonial architecture and main tourist sites. Safe during the day with Tourist Police around, but empties out and gets risky after 6pm. Worth visiting for sightseeing, but don't stay here for dinner or stay here overnight.
The upscale business and shopping district with good security, international restaurants, and modern amenities. One of the safest areas in the city, but no local character and everything costs tourist prices.
