Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
The upscale business and shopping district with good security, international restaurants, and modern amenities. One of the safest areas in the city, but no local character and everything costs tourist prices.
Santo Domingo's upscale business and shopping district with high-rise condos, international offices, and some of the most expensive real estate in the Caribbean. Tree-lined streets have luxury shopping at Blue Mall, upscale restaurants, and well-dressed professionals. Security is good - private guards outside buildings, well-maintained lighting, regular police presence. Everything costs more than local areas though. You're paying tourist and expat prices. Restaurant staff speak English since they cater to business travelers. Eating alone feels normal at places like Victoria by PorterHouse or LILA - you'll often see other women with laptops or books. Safe to walk during the day and reasonably safe early evening. It's mainly a business district so it gets quiet after 10pm when offices close. You won't get authentic Dominican culture here, but if safety matters most to you, this is the place. The area around Avenida Abraham Lincoln stays busier with restaurants and some nightlife, but locals go elsewhere for serious evening entertainment.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Middle ground between upscale Piantini and working-class areas with more affordable dining and some local nightlife. Safety is inconsistent, especially on side streets and after dark. Better for experienced travelers who speak some Spanish.
The historic center with colonial architecture and main tourist sites. Safe during the day with Tourist Police around, but empties out and gets risky after 6pm. Worth visiting for sightseeing, but don't stay here for dinner or stay here overnight.
Historic residential area with embassies and museums. Mixed safety - better near main avenues and embassies, inconsistent on residential streets. Limited tourist amenities and English. Better for daytime museum visits than staying here.
