Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Guayaquil

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Guayaquil.

Summary

The historic hill neighborhood with 444 steps, colorful colonial houses, and tourist cafes. Heavy security makes it safe during the day, but head down before sunset. Prices run double the rest of the city.

Details

The 444 steps up Cerro Santa Ana lead through colorful colonial houses, art galleries, small cafes, and museums. Security guards and police are stationed all along the climb, and during the day it's packed with tour groups - families, older visitors, everyone. Feels genuinely safe while the sun's up. Timing matters though. Around 6pm vendors start packing up, tourists head down, and the whole place shifts from busy cultural site to quiet residential streets. Even security thins out. Weekend evenings keep more people around with bars and restaurants open later, but locals still say leave before dark. Prices here run about double what you'd pay elsewhere in the city - tourist tax. The colonial architecture is worth seeing, just plan it as a daytime visit, not somewhere to hang around into evening.

Upscale gated suburb across the river - malls, chain restaurants, highest safety in the region. Best if security is your only concern, but it's sterile, pricey, and far from anything cultural.
