Guayaquil, Ecuador
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Guayaquil.
Safest tourist area with 24/7 security, modern waterfront, upscale restaurants. Only place you can really walk around at night. Lacks local character but that's the trade-off for safety.
Modern waterfront development - designer buildings, upscale restaurants, riverside promenade. The main tourist zone with 24/7 security that actually works. You can walk around after dark here, which is unusual for Guayaquil. Relaxed atmosphere, especially evenings when it lights up and stays busy with tourists and locals eating at the restaurants. Italian spots like Cucina Fiume, seafood at La Regatta, cafes like Sweet & Coffee. Solo dining is totally normal - the place caters to tourists and internationals. Connects right to Malecón 2000, walking distance to Las Peñas. Best base if you're exploring the tourist circuit. Locals joke the biggest danger is bird droppings from herons and egrets in the trees overhead. Restaurant staff speak English, service is professional. You can walk around late evening without the anxiety you'd have elsewhere in the city. Not particularly Ecuadorian - could be a modern waterfront anywhere - but the safety and amenities make it the obvious choice if you want to go out at night.

Upscale gated suburb across the river - malls, chain restaurants, highest safety in the region. Best if security is your only concern, but it's sterile, pricey, and far from anything cultural.
The main tourist boardwalk with heavy security, museums, and waterfront restaurants. Safe and busy during the day, dead after dark. Decent starting point for the tourist circuit.
The historic hill neighborhood with 444 steps, colorful colonial houses, and tourist cafes. Heavy security makes it safe during the day, but head down before sunset. Prices run double the rest of the city.
