Guayaquil, Ecuador
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Guayaquil.
Upscale gated suburb across the river - malls, chain restaurants, highest safety in the region. Best if security is your only concern, but it's sterile, pricey, and far from anything cultural.
Gated communities across the river where wealthy locals and expats live. Think upscale American suburb - Plaza Lagos shopping mall, chain restaurants, manicured lawns. Everything's designed for cars, not walking. Wide streets, separated developments. Safest part of the metro area by far. Private security everywhere, basically no street crime. International restaurants, gyms, exclusive clubs for Ecuador's upper class. More English here than anywhere else in Guayaquil since expats live here and staff deal with foreigners. But it's completely sterile. Could be an upscale suburb anywhere - totally disconnected from actual Ecuadorian culture. Makes sense if safety is your absolute priority or you're here long-term for work. Want to experience real Ecuador? You'll feel pretty isolated. Most travelers find it too far from tourist sites and cultural areas for a short visit. Good for families or anyone who values security over everything else.
