Luxor, Egypt
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Luxor.
Quieter and cheaper than downtown with good daytime safety. Better for experiencing local life than tourist infrastructure. Limited evening options - you'll need taxis to get to restaurants and activities.
Karnak Temple area is 2-3 km north of downtown along the East Bank. The temple complex is massive - takes several hours to see fully. Quieter and more residential than the Luxor Temple area, with fewer tourists and more locals. Mid-range hotels cluster near the temple, along with Egyptian restaurants at lower prices than downtown. Well-patrolled during the day when people are visiting the temple, feels safe then. Gets empty after sunset when the temple closes and tour groups leave. Street lighting isn't as good as downtown, fewer English speakers in local shops and restaurants. Works if you want cheaper prices and less tourist density, but you'll need taxis to get to downtown restaurants and evening activities. The Sound and Light Show at the temple runs at sunset - columns get illuminated while narration covers the history of Thebes.
