Details

Downtown Nadi centers around the municipal market and main shopping streets. During the day you'll see locals buying produce, tourists at the handicraft market, and office workers getting lunch at cheap restaurants. It's more authentically Fijian than the tourist zones - you'll hear Fijian and Hindi more than English. Market vendors will aggressively try to sell you fruit and souvenirs. Petty theft and pickpocketing happen here, especially when it's crowded. Vendors and shop owners can be pushy - you need to say no firmly and keep moving. The area changes completely at night - it empties out and the lighting is poor. Most people avoid walking around downtown after dark, taking taxis to Martintar for nightlife or staying in Denarau instead. The bus station behind the market is useful during the day.
