Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Nadi

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Nadi.

Summary

Wailoaloa Beach has cheap hostels with female-only dorms and a social backpacker scene. The beach is polluted and not safe for swimming. Treat it as a budget base for day trips, not a beach destination.

Details

Wailoaloa Beach is the backpacker area - several hostels clustered near a beach. The vibe is young and social, with travelers meeting at beach bars like Sailor's Beach for burgers, pizza, and Fiji Bitter at sunset. Hostels have female-only dorms starting around FJ$20-25 per night. It's easy to meet other travelers and join group day trips. The problem is the beach itself - it's not safe for swimming because of runoff from the airport, oil companies, and town draining into this part of the bay. The sand is black, the water is dirty, and there's trash everywhere: broken glass, car parts, fridges, clothing. You have to watch where you step to avoid glass. Some hostels tell guests not to walk to the beach alone. This is really a 'cheap place to sleep near the airport' rather than an actual beach destination. During the day it's relatively safe with other backpackers around, but at night the area empties out and lighting is poor outside the hostel compounds. Take taxis to Martintar if you want to go out at night.
