Helsinki, Finland
10 uncomfortable travel moments most of us run into at some point. Our guide shows you exactly how to respond to each one, so you never blank when it matters. Used by women from 50+ countries.
Wealthy waterfront neighborhood with nice architecture and very low crime. Quiet and safe but expensive. Limited evening options.
Southern Helsinki's wealthy waterfront area. Art Nouveau mansions with pastel facades, tree-lined streets down to the Baltic, and Huvilakatu street with its curved row of elegant buildings. Wealthy Finnish families have lived here for generations - you get pristine sidewalks, maintained parks, and the quiet that comes with money. During the day you'll see well-dressed people walking dogs, elderly couples watching the sea, mothers with expensive strollers in Kaivopuisto park. Cafes have sea views and good pastries but cost more than other neighborhoods. People working on laptops fit in - privacy and space are valued here even more than usual Finnish reserve. English is common since the area gets international tourists. The waterfront promenade goes for kilometers, good lighting and people around even after dark. Streets feel safe - crime is basically nonexistent. Trade-off is limited evening entertainment, just a few upscale restaurants and cafes. By 10pm it's quiet except for occasional residents heading home. More of a peaceful, upscale base than a nightlife area.
