Details

This is where the main tourist sites are - Senate Square with the white cathedral, university's neoclassical buildings, Market Square with the presidential palace, and 19th century architecture. Tour groups concentrate here during the day, people photograph the cathedral, cruise ship visitors shop at the waterfront market. The neighborhood mixes tourist attractions with government offices and some residential areas. Northern parts are residential with locals, while the southern waterfront and Senate Square get lots of visitors. Café Clé is run by Brazilian owners who've set it up like a living room with books and simple food - welcomes people staying for hours. Restaurant Kolme Kruunua has served Finnish food in the same décor since 1952. English is common in the touristy southern section, less so in residential blocks north. After evening it changes - tour groups leave, tourist restaurants close early, gets quiet. Street lighting is good because of government buildings. Safe to walk around even late. Eating alone during the day is normal with all the tourists, fewer evening options than Kallio or Punavuori.
