Saint-Michel is a multicultural district with a market and cheap local food. It works for a day visit and an early evening, but the side streets are not good for walking alone late at night.
Saint-Michel is a multicultural, working-class district around the Basilique Saint-Michel and its detached bell tower, with a large flea market and daytime street life. It is more local and rougher than Saint-Pierre, with cheaper restaurants, student bars and live music. During the day it is busy and fine to visit alone, and the square is a good spot for coffee. At night it gets edgier: side streets are darker and quieter after midnight, and some visitors find it uncomfortable on their own. Eat or drink at the busy places, then take a taxi or walk back along the main roads. It is a poor choice as a base if feeling secure at night is a priority.

A student and market quarter with cheap food and a social feel. It works for a day and an early evening, but plan a safe route home after the bars close.
Bastide is a quiet riverside district across the Garonne with parks, views and a relaxed cafe scene. It is quiet at night, so plan the trip back.
Saint-Pierre is the historic centre and the simplest place to base yourself. Everything is walkable and evenings are social, with pickpocketing in busy squares as the main risk.
