Saint-Pierre is the historic centre and the simplest place to base yourself. Everything is walkable and evenings are social, with pickpocketing in busy squares as the main risk.
Saint-Pierre is the medieval core of Bordeaux, a tangle of pedestrian streets around Place du Parlement, Place Saint-Pierre and the Garonne quays. It is the easiest area to stay in, since restaurants, wine bars and sights are all a few minutes apart on foot and the streets stay busy well into the evening. Terraces fill up on warm nights, and sitting alone with a glass of wine or a book draws no attention. Place de la Bourse and the quays are a short walk away. Petty theft is the main risk in the crowded squares and on the nearby trams, so keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets. Some side streets get quieter and rowdier after the bars close, so walk back along the main pedestrian routes.
