A student and market quarter with cheap food and a social feel. It works for a day and an early evening, but plan a safe route home after the bars close.
Victoire and Capucins is the student and market quarter south-west of the old town. During the day the Marché des Capucins is the main food market, with oyster counters, cheese stalls and small cafes where eating alone is common. Place de la Victoire is full of students, cheap bars and terraces, and stays busy until late. That also means it gets loud after the bars close, with drunken groups, catcalling and some opportunistic theft. It works for cheap food and a social early evening, but plan your way home. Take the tram or a taxi instead of walking through quiet side streets, and be especially careful on the way toward Gare Saint-Jean.

Saint-Michel is a multicultural district with a market and cheap local food. It works for a day visit and an early evening, but the side streets are not good for walking alone late at night.
Bastide is a quiet riverside district across the Garonne with parks, views and a relaxed cafe scene. It is quiet at night, so plan the trip back.
Saint-Pierre is the historic centre and the simplest place to base yourself. Everything is walkable and evenings are social, with pickpocketing in busy squares as the main risk.
