Eppendorf is quiet and safe, with good cafés and short transit rides to the center. It suits a calm base. For nightlife and a social scene, look at Sternschanze or St. Pauli instead.
Eppendorf is a leafy, well-off residential quarter north of the center, with old buildings, boutiques, a weekly market and a relaxed café scene. It is among the calmest and safest places in Hamburg, with families, students and staff from the nearby hospital and university, and professionals out and about at all hours. The main street, Eppendorfer Baum, is lined with cafés and restaurants, and the quiet side streets and the Isebekkanal are good for walks. Nightlife is low-key, with wine bars, neighborhood restaurants and a few cocktail spots rather than clubs. It is further from the main sights, but the U3 or buses reach the center in about 15-20 minutes. Streets are very quiet late at night, so take a taxi or the night bus if you are out late.

Ottensen and Altona are safe and pleasant, with a village feel inside a large city. They work well as a base for women who want calm streets, good coffee and quick transport to the center.
Sternschanze is one of the easier areas in Hamburg for a woman traveling alone, with plenty of cafés, a relaxed bar scene and short walking distances. It is rougher near the station and park at night, and protests happen from time to time.
This is the easiest part of Hamburg for sightseeing, with good transport, many hotels and plenty of people around. The main risks are pickpockets in the crowds and empty streets in the business areas at night.
