Ottensen and Altona are safe and pleasant, with a village feel inside a large city. They work well as a base for women who want calm streets, good coffee and quick transport to the center.
Ottensen was a working-class district and is now a popular residential area, with a pedestrian-friendly center, independent shops, cafés, courtyards and many families and young professionals. Next door, Altona has a larger shopping street, the Elbe waterfront and Altona station for regional and long-distance trains. The area is calm and residential and feels safe at all hours. Streets around Ottenser Hauptstraße and Bahrenfelder Straße stay busy until the evening, and the Elbe promenade fills up on sunny days. It makes a good base if you want something quieter than St. Pauli but still close, with a short S-Bahn or bus ride into the center. Women eating or having coffee alone won't stand out. At night the quiet side streets and the stretch around Altona station are emptier, so stick to the main roads or transit when it is late.

Sternschanze is one of the easier areas in Hamburg for a woman traveling alone, with plenty of cafés, a relaxed bar scene and short walking distances. It is rougher near the station and park at night, and protests happen from time to time.
Eppendorf is quiet and safe, with good cafés and short transit rides to the center. It suits a calm base. For nightlife and a social scene, look at Sternschanze or St. Pauli instead.
This is the easiest part of Hamburg for sightseeing, with good transport, many hotels and plenty of people around. The main risks are pickpockets in the crowds and empty streets in the business areas at night.
