St. Pauli is a good place to walk around by day and a party district at night. It works for women who like nightlife and want a central base, provided they stick to busy streets, watch their belongings and drinks, and avoid walking alone through quiet parts late at night.
The Reeperbahn, a string of music clubs, theaters and the football club's stadium make St. Pauli Hamburg's nightlife quarter. It also has a residential side with pubs, small restaurants and harbour views. During the day it is easy to get around, with the Landungsbrücken piers, the Elbe promenade and the old Elbtunnel all close by. At night the Reeperbahn fills with groups of friends, stag and hen parties and tourists. The mix of alcohol, crowds and sex-industry venues means more unwanted attention and more pickpockets than elsewhere in Hamburg. The Davidwache police station sits on the Reeperbahn and officers are visible on weekend nights. Side streets such as Hamburger Berg, Hein-Hoyer-Straße and Wohlwillstraße are more local and calmer than the main strip. After midnight, stay on busy streets and take a taxi or the night trains rather than walking to quieter areas.

St. Georg is convenient and tolerant, with some of the better cafés in central Hamburg, but the station side is rougher than most of the city. It works as a base if you pick your street carefully and keep to Lange Reihe and the Alster side at night.
This is the easiest part of Hamburg for sightseeing, with good transport, many hotels and plenty of people around. The main risks are pickpockets in the crowds and empty streets in the business areas at night.
Sternschanze is one of the easier areas in Hamburg for a woman traveling alone, with plenty of cafés, a relaxed bar scene and short walking distances. It is rougher near the station and park at night, and protests happen from time to time.
