The historic center with Marienplatz at its heart. Well-lit and safe, good for first-time visitors. Tourist prices but English-speaking staff and walkable to most sights.
Altstadt is the historic center with Marienplatz, the Glockenspiel, and centuries-old buildings that survived the war. Pedestrian zones stay busy until late with locals and tourists. The traditional beer halls have communal seating, so eating alone means sitting at long tables with other people - it's expected, not awkward. The area is well-lit with visible police around major landmarks. Tourist police work peak hours and speak English. Streets feel safe at 11pm when restaurants are still serving. You'll hear English constantly since this is the main tourist zone. Prices run higher than local neighborhoods, but you can walk to most attractions. Families during the day, couples in the evening - enough variety that being alone doesn't stand out.

The university and artist neighborhood with cafes and wine bars. Safe, active until late, less touristy than the center. Good cafe culture if you want to sit and read.
