Details

Barrio de La Concepción is a few blocks east of Parque Central - quieter and more residential but only a five-minute walk to the center. The neighborhood is built around La Concepción Convent ruins, which now house the upscale Hotel Casa Santo Domingo. Less tour groups here, so it feels more like a residential area than a tourist zone. You'll find boutique hotels and converted colonial houses with courtyards. The area attracts people who want to be close to things but have quiet at night. Less English spoken than right at Parque Central, but you're close enough to walk to tourist services. Still cobblestones everywhere, still need good shoes. Safe during day and night due to proximity to the center and security from the upscale hotels.

Centro Histórico is where most of Antigua's tourist infrastructure is - cafes, restaurants, hostels, and Spanish schools all within walking distance. Safe during the day with visible police, but everything closes early at night. This is where most travelers stay.
