Antigua, Guatemala
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Antigua.
Centro Histórico is where most of Antigua's tourist infrastructure is - cafes, restaurants, hostels, and Spanish schools all within walking distance. Safe during the day with visible police, but everything closes early at night. This is where most travelers stay.
Centro Histórico is the UNESCO-protected area around Parque Central where you'll spend most of your time. The colonial churches, restaurants, rooftop bars, and Spanish schools are all here in a compact 1.5km grid. During the day it's busy - tour groups at Santa Catalina Arch, vendors at the Artisan Market, and people on laptops in coffee shops. Tourist Police are visible, and the colonial buildings look good. Solo dining is normal - you'll see other women eating alone at cafes. After 10pm the streets empty out fast when restaurants close. The cobblestones look nice but they're hard on your feet and destroy suitcase wheels. English is common in tourist businesses. Most hostels with female-only dorms are in this area.
