Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Flores

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Flores.

Summary

Isla de Flores has the hostels, restaurants, and bars concentrated on a small walkable island. It's the obvious base for visiting Tikal and exploring the area.

Details

The island is where most travelers stay - it's got the restaurants, bars, and lake views in a compact walkable area. Takes 30 minutes to circle on foot, with narrow cobblestone streets connecting pastel-colored buildings. Most are 2-3 stories, giving it more of a village feel than a city. Street lighting is good around the main plaza and lakefront, and people walk around safely after dark. Things stay active until 10-11pm with people eating dinner, sitting at lakefront bars watching sunset, or just walking around. After that it's quieter but still feels safe. The main hostels are on the island, including Los Amigos which has female-only dorms and runs group Tikal tours. Eating alone is normal - you'll see plenty of people reading or working over meals. Rooftop bars like Sky Bar fill up at sunset with backpackers, easy to chat with people if you want. English works fine here since tourism is the main business.
