Flores, Guatemala
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Flores.
San Miguel is quiet and secluded across the lake - good for peace and nature, but isolated with limited food options. Better for people who want solitude than those who prefer community and easy access to restaurants.
San Miguel is across the lake from Flores, 5-10 minutes by boat. It's quiet - just a few lakefront hotels along the shore, surrounded by trees and jungle instead of restaurants and streets. The appeal is peace and nature: swimming from your hotel, kayaking, watching sunsets without crowds. Very tranquil but also isolated. Almost no restaurants or shops, so you'll take boats back to Flores for meals and activities. Some hotels run boats on demand, others on a schedule. Crime isn't an issue because nobody's around, but that same isolation might not work if you prefer having people nearby. Not a social scene - you won't meet other backpackers here. Good for a couple quiet nights if you're burned out from travel, but most people prefer Flores where there's more going on and easier access to food and activities.
