Details

The Castle District feels like stepping back in time with its cobblestone streets and medieval buildings. It's definitely one of the safest areas in Budapest - lots of tourist police around and the area stays busy with visitors until late. The main tourist spots are well-lit and you'll always see other people around, which makes walking alone comfortable even in the evening. The downside is that everything here is tourist-priced, so expect to pay a lot more for food and drinks than you would elsewhere in the city. The views over the Danube are gorgeous, especially at sunset, but some of the side streets get pretty quiet after dark. If you're staying in this area, you'll feel very secure but it can feel a bit touristy and separated from the real Budapest. The funicular is fun but overpriced - you can easily walk up the hill instead.
