Delhi, India
Massive middle-class shopping district with budget accommodation. Safe during market hours due to crowds and police, but more conservative than South Delhi. Good for shopping and budget stays, go elsewhere for dining and evenings.
Karol Bagh is one of Delhi's biggest, most chaotic shopping districts - middle-class families buying electronics, jewelry, textiles. Constant crowds, market energy, and police make it relatively safe during operating hours - too many people around for serious crime to go unnoticed. Gaffar Market (electronics) and Ajmal Khan Road (clothing) stay packed until 9 PM. You'll get stared at more here than in South Delhi, but the crowd density provides some protection. English is limited outside established shops and hotels - have Google Translate ready. The metro station area and main markets are lit and safe, but side streets empty fast once shops close. Budget hotels like Smyle Inn cater to backpackers, affordable and near New Delhi Railway Station. Market closes Mondays. This is authentic middle-class Delhi shopping - not comfortable by Western standards, but safe through crowds. Good for budget accommodation and shopping, but go to South Delhi for dining and evenings.
