Kochi, India
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Kochi.
Historic spice trading area with Jew Town and the synagogue. Good during the day, unsafe after dark. Come in the morning, leave before evening.
Next to Fort Kochi but different feel - this is where the actual spice trade happens. The wholesale markets smell like cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon. Jew Town has the antique shops and Paradesi Synagogue. During the day, Jew Street (Synagogue Lane) is packed with tourists looking at old Portuguese tiles, brass stuff, wooden furniture. The area has Hindu temples, churches, a mosque, and the synagogue all close together. It's fine during daylight with Tourist Police around. After sunset around 6-7 PM, the traders close up and go home. The narrow lanes get dark and empty. Local women and hostel staff will tell you not to walk here alone after dark - they're right. Come during the day, leave before evening.
